Nurse Staffing Firm Best Practices and Operations Information

Nurse staffing firms play a critical role in the nation's health care system by quickly and efficiently supplying hundreds of thousands of health care workers in a wide range of skill categories on an as-needed basis. Registered and Licensed Practical Nurses and Certified Nursing Assistants are among the professionals whom nurse staffing firms employ and assign.

Nurse staffing is a highly regulated segment of the staffing industry. To help protect nurse staffing firms from legal risk and help them better serve their clients and employees, ASA has published the following suggested best practices and operations information. This information was developed by the ASA health care section policy council, which is composed of ASA health care staffing firm company representatives committed to the development of education, tools, and resources for the health care staffing sector.

The best practices and operations information address

  • Organization, capitalization, and operations
  • Compliance with laws and regulations
  • Treatment of applicants and employees
  • Determination of applicant experience and qualifications
  • Communication with employees
  • Complaint, grievance, and incident management
  • Advertising
  • Client relations

In addition to the best practices, sample forms are also available to download. These sample forms have been shared by members of the American Staffing Association health care section policy council (with the exception of the Model Agreement for Health Care Staffing) and are not be construed as an endorsement by ASA. These can be used as a guide for staffing firms to develop their own customized forms.
