Joe Mackey, CAC, CSP, owner, XL Staffing Service
Wednesday, 4:15–5:30 p.m.
Section Session
With numerous qualified workers but fewer positions to fill, the industrial sector has been hit hard by the recession. But it will probably be the first to rebound. Join Bill Rohr, chairman of the ASA industrial section policy council, and ASA board member Joe Mackey, CSP, for this informative conversation regarding industrial staffing strategies. You'll share and gain techniques and tactics to help you run your business effectively and smoothly during turbulent times—and to expand your business, regardless of the economy.
Find out what your peers are doing to increase sales and lower operating costs. Discuss topics such as leveraging safety as a differentiator, client engagement, consultative selling approaches, meeting client expectations, and how to hire and deliver the right person every time for every job. In this lively and interactive session, you'll network with your peers to discover what will help improve your bottom line without bottoming out. Get a list of ideas you can use right way.
Transitional Business Opportunities for Industrial Staffing
Jennifer L. Dean, president, Dean's Professional Services
Thursday, 2:30–3:45 p.m.
You have a stable of stable workers. They have good work ethics, desirable work habits, and they're hard-working. They have skill set X. In this workshop, Jennifer Dean will show you how to transition your business and your workers' abilities to sell skill set Y.
In today's changing industrial staffing market, successful firms are finding ways to transition talent to create client demand and bring in revenue. Dean will help you identify and develop business models that succeed in this sector, and she'll discuss opportunities you may have considered as only tangential, such as call centers, environmental services, and hospital food service. She'll show you how to harness employee loyalty, provide consistent work, and retain and place employees you trust who in turn will save your clients time and money. Rather than bring in new workers who could disappoint you and your clients, explore how training employees and boosting their skill sets can set your company apart and enhance your value proposition.
Crack the Classification Code—The Key to Controlling Workers' Compensation Costs
Michael Mann, executive vice president and practice leader, Assurance Agency Ltd.
Ken Stryczek, regional operations manager, United Heartland Insurance Co.
Friday, 9–10:30 a.m.
A constant issue for staffing firm owners and managers is the correct classification of temporary and contract employees for workers' compensation premium rating purposes. Incorrect classifications can lead to unexpected additional costs at audit that cut into the company's bottom line. Misclassification can also result in rate increases, undermining your ability to compete in the employment marketplace. The National Council on Compensation Insurance classification system, for example, focuses principally on the operations of an employer, rather than on the particular occupations of the employees, which can lead to uncertainty and complexity in properly classifying workplace exposure for temporary and contract employees.
In this workshop Michael Mann will show you tools and approaches you can use in partnering with your clients to classify employees appropriately. He will identify various state differences in employee classification systems, and illustrate some of the intricacies associated with different classification systems. He'll show you strategies to implement right away to increase your accuracy and decrease your costs.
