Executive and Management Learning Track

Building a Staffing and Recruiting Company from the Inside Out: The People Behind the Promise
Joe Calloway, keynote speaker and consultant, the Calloway Group
Wednesday, 2–3 p.m.

Let's begin with the obvious: Your company is your people. Your brand is your people. Your reputation is your people.

You are in the ultimate people business. Perhaps more than any other business, your success directly depends on the quality of your people. Who you hire. Who you retain. And how you engage them every day. Come prepared to share your best ideas and be open to new ways of attracting and motivating great people. Participate with keynoter Joe Calloway in developing at least two things you can immediately execute back home to leverage what is quite literally your most important asset: the people behind the promise.

Executive Discussion: Timely Ideas to Grow Your Business
Aaron Green, CSP, president and founder, PSG Global Solutions and Professional Staffing Group
Wednesday, 4:15–5:30 p.m.

Discuss trends affecting the staffing industry, new opportunities for growth, and ways to create efficiencies that will boost your bottom line. ASA board member Aaron Green will share timely ideas and encourage group discussion on a wide array of executive-level topics, including lead generation, branding, diversity recruiting, client and candidate loyalty programs, compensation and incentives, and how to shift clients from focusing on price to seeking value. Green will open the session by inviting participants to choose from a list of options in selecting the most pressing issues of the day for executive discussion.

Green believes that while cost containment is important, the only way through these challenging times is to grow your business. As an industry thought leader, Green has firsthand knowledge of what successful companies are doing to grow—regardless of market conditions.

Three Recessions, Three Turnarounds
Sean Bisceglia, chief executive officer, TalentDrive
Thursday, 11:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.

Sean Bisceglia started three separate business ventures in three separate economically trying times: 1992, 2002, and 2007. The experience was invaluable. But it took a lot of hard work and effort. All three companies found great success through mergers or acquisitions, and they were very rewarding on the back end. Learn what went right, what went wrong, and how to apply these ideas to your company.

Bisceglia will break down the operational practices that all companies must embrace to succeed. He'll guide participants through a tool kit of business development, including marketing and positioning during a recession, technology and innovation through automated communication, financial best practices (such as how to evaluate the market and determine distinct advantages when starting a new business), the importance of building talent relationships, and the benefits of strategic mergers or acquisitions. Discussion among participants will surely create an “aha” moment for you to contemplate.

State of Workers' Compensation
Bill Nagel, president, RCS Services
Thursday, 2:30–3:45 p.m.

Initial signs of the workers' compensation market shifting from more than three years of a soft cycle to an inevitable hard cycle began late in 2008. Bill Nagel will analyze and critique commentary and forecasts by the major carriers insuring the staffing industry, independent analysts, and the broker community. He'll discuss how the changing insurance market has affected rates, products, and security credit.

Then Nagel will share proven initiatives and strategies for capitalizing on a hardening market and discuss what underwriters focus on in a downturn and hardening market. You'll hear solid ideas that work to get the best pricing and lowest security.

Staffing and Business Ethics: How to Know When You're Crossing the Line
Marshall Schminke, Ph.D., professor of business ethics, University of Central Florida
Thursday, 4:30–5:30 p.m.

Business ethics is not always about good guys versus bad guys. Sure, there are bad guys out there—but many stories concern people who weren't pulled to the dark side by the lure of money or power, they simply got in over their heads, and the next thing you know, they are doing bad things to try to dig out. This could be you.

Using research Marshall Schminke developed with the Ethics Resource Center, participants will discuss the current state of business ethics and how it relates to the staffing industry, including the ASA Code of Ethics and its provisions on work force transfers. Learn how ethical and unethical decisions are made, and how to manage an ethical workplace based on evidence of what does and doesn't work—the same way you manage other aspects of your business. Take a quick self-analysis quiz to see where you fall within the spectrum of ethical business management.

The Power of Profitability: Strategies for Maximizing Shareholder Value
Panel moderated by Greg Palmer, president, G. Palmer & Associates
Thursday, 4:30–5:30 p.m.

The battle to combat continual market erosion takes more than tactical tinkering with bill and pay rates. To win the battle to generate profits these days, you need a strategic understanding of the macroeconomic drivers for operating profit margin. Greg Palmer will lead a panel of senior staffing executives, including Dan Campbell, CSP; James A. Essey, CSP; and Karenjo Goodwin, to review margin trends, discuss reasons for the erosion, and explore the myths behind margins past and present.

With a panel of senior staffing executives who are active in the Young Presidents Organization and audience interaction, he will examine specific strategies, such as niche development, lowering costs, adding value, and pricing to evaluate what works, what doesn't, and what that means for the future of operating margins.

Rethinking VMS and MSP: Great Opportunities for Staffing Companies?
Roy Butler, chief information officer, Medfinders Inc.
Stephen Holmes, vice president, contingent work force outsourcing, KellyOCG
Steven Ranson, executive vice president and general manager, ATR International
Friday, 10:30–11:45 a.m.

The terms VMS and MSP (vendor management systems and managed service providers) can strike fear into the hearts of staffing company managers. Often viewed by default as a threat to a staffing company's business, many in the industry have shied away from an in-depth assessment of the potential opportunities such programs can bring. With these programs now mature in the marketplace, it's time for the industry to reassess their roles and take a fresh look.

This workshop will surely challenge long-held beliefs and create thought-provoking discussion based upon metrics, detailed case studies of staffing companies that are successfully expanding their business through VMS or MSP arrangements, and first-hand experiences on how to work with VMSs and why MSPs actually represent huge opportunities.
