Staffing: Big and Growing

Behind the Numbers
  • Averaging $88 billion a year over the last three years, the U.S. staffing industry is bigger than the U.S. motion picture industry.
  • The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that employment services (which is mostly staffing) will be among the top 10 industries with the largest growth in 10 years, adding approximately a half million new jobs.
  • BLS projects that jobs in employment industries will grow nearly twice as fast as overall employment, 19% from 2008–2018, compared to the 11% growth projected for all industries combined.
Staffing World Attendee Demographics
  • Six of 10 attendees hold job titles of director or higher, including owner/operators (20%). Six of 10 attendees are women.
  • Attendees tend to come from smaller companies: nearly half said their firms earned $15 million or less in annual revenue and 71% said their firm had five or fewer offices.
  • Generations X and Y dominate Staffing World. Six of 10 attendees were under the age of 45. And nearly half had 10 years or less experience in the staffing industry (48% in 2008, up from 40% in 2007).
  • Ninety percent of attendees influence their staffing firm's purchasing decisions, and 73% visited the expo hall three or more times.
  • More than one-third (34%) of attendees have earned ASA professional designations (Certified Staffing Professional™ or Technical Services Certified™).
